Collection Organization
The acquisition of books and resources will be based on the guidelines in the Athens City Schools Library Media Center Policies and Procedures Manual approved by the Board of Education with the administration having the final say in all acquisitions. Donations may be accepted provided they meet Athens City Schools board approved policies.
Shelving
Books and other resources are shelved accordingly:
Magazines are available for students to look at while in the library media center. Magazines are not checked out.
Professional books (Prof) are shelved separately on the bookshelf in the teacher’s workroom.
Censorship
The AIS Library Media Center abides by the Library Bill of Rights and deals with Censorship as well as Challenged Materials according to the Policy Manual approved by the Board of Education.
Devices
Students will follow the Athens City Schools Board of Education Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) when using school technology. Devices may be used for educational purposes and Copyright Guidelines will be followed.
Beginning in August 2015 Athens City Schools went 1:1 with devices. Athens Intermediate School students use iPads while taking Accelerated Reader tests, searching for books and resources, conducting research, working on assigned projects, and utilizing school approved software programs and apps.

- The library media center opens daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Students and staff may access digital resource materials (e-Books and helpful websites for tutoring and research) 24/7 on our Helpful Links Page.
- Students visit the library media center each week to check out materials for a two-week time period.
- The following library schedule is used at AIS:

- The library media center is open-access to meet the needs of all educational partners. Students may flex in throughout the week to take care of library needs (check out materials, conduct research, read in designated lounge areas, etc.) provided the librarian or library aide are present. Open Check-Out times are indicated as “Flex” on the schedule and preferred for non-scheduled students.
- Missed library times may be made up at the discretion of the librarian.
- The library media center will be closed the first two weeks and the last two weeks of school to allow staff to complete management duties if needed.
Circulation
- Students conduct self-check-in and self-check-out of all library materials.
- Students may check out up to 2 books at a time. If students do not finish a book, it may be renewed one time for a total of 4 weeks.
- Books are overdue after two weeks.
- Reference materials may be checked out for one day with permission.
- Fines will be applied to overdue books at a rate of 5 cents per day, excluding weekends and holidays. Overdue fines will not exceed $5.00.
- All students will be responsible for lost or damaged books. Reminders will be sent home to collect fees.
- Faculty members have unlimited checkouts within reason.
- All materials are due at the end of each semester.

- Students will have their books when they come to the library.
- Students will use time wisely when choosing appropriate books.
- Students will consider the following questions when choosing materials:
- Is this interesting to me?
- Can I be successful reading and comprehending this?
- Will this help me with my research?
Be Respectful
- Students will take care of their library books.
- Students will use all library materials and equipment correctly.
- Students will respect adults and peers by talking quietly while in the
library.
Be Resourceful
- Students will know how to use library independently when the library media specialist is helping others.

- Non-Fiction is shelved based on the Dewey Decimal System.
- Fiction (F or Fic)is shelved based on genres & Author’s last name (first three letters)
- Easy or Picture Books (E) are shelved based on the Author’s last name (first three letters)
- Reference books are shelved separately from the other collection as Ref and Dewey Classification
- Biographies are shelved in a separate location using B over the Author’s last name (first three letters)
